Everyone should be a fan of probiotics and take them on a daily basis because they naturally help to maintain a healthy digestive system. Probiotics help restore and preserve the ‘good’ bacteria in your body. Unfortunately, there are things that the body can encounter that can throw the bacteria out of balance. Things such as additives, sugar, and preservatives jeopardize our gut bacteria. Also, exposure to steroids, anti-inflammatory, and antibiotic medications also play a part in destroying healthy bacteria. We can replace and keep our bodies balanced with live probiotics found in foods such as kefir, kombucha sauerkraut, and yogurt. I like to make a morning salad that contains ingredients such as pickled, cabbage, diced cucumber, a bit of jalapeno and avocado and lime.
Another great way to incorporate probiotics into the diet is to eat teff. Teff is the main ingredient in the Ethiopian bread Injera. This Ethiopian dietary staple is a probiotic (the bread itself is fermented). According to The New York Times Olympic gold medalist and world record holder Haile Gebrselassie called teff a secret to the success of Ethiopian runners. This 3000-year-old grain is a powerhouse superfood grown all over Ethiopia. It is gluten-free, whole grain, and extremely high in minerals. It is becoming very popular in America for this reason.
Unless you eat these foods on a daily basis you might want to consider taking a supplement. There are many types of probiotics on the market, and sometimes this can be a bit overwhelming and confusing. The two main probiotics you see on the market are Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium. According to WebMD probiotics help the body in the following ways:
- Treat Irritable bowel syndrome
- Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD)
- Infectious diarrhea (caused by viruses, bacteria, or parasites)
- Antibiotic-related diarrhea
So how do you pick a good probiotic? First look for a probiotic that has a high potency (50 billion CFU is ideal), and that works for every diet (free of gluten, soy, and dairy).Your probiotic should also give you a clear shelf life stability, and have at least 12 different species.

Share the Love Smoothie:
2 cups Almond Milk
1 cup Strawberries
1 cup Raspberries
2 Tablespoons Almond Butter
3 Medjool dates pitted
5-6 ice cubes
Place all ingredients into a blender and blend until smooth (open urinary tract capsule and pour into a blender).
Pour smoothie into 2 separate bowls, add toppings and enjoy!
