Depression, Suicide, and Low Cost Mood Lifting Strategies
I recently read an article that handling mental health properly is reserved for the wealthy – expensive therapists, alternative approaches such as ketamine infusions, brain scans, and advanced neurofeedback.
There are many things you can do that are low or no cost. Exercise and yoga are perhaps the best ways to lift your mood. A brief morning run, walk or personal yoga practice are great ways to set the tone for a great day. Even before that getting quality sleep really counts. I am very conscious to get at least 7 hours as fatigue can feed a bad mood easily. I also try and meditate every afternoon. Nothing makes me feel as good as a deep meditation. Personally, I use guided meditations and also mantras. During the day I listen to positive affirmation tracks off of iTunes. How you feed your psyche matters.
If you cannot afford therapy you can attend 12 step meetings. Everyone has something they need to work on and work out – whether it’s AA, Codependents, Alanon, Overeaters anonymous, Shopaholics, Love addicts there are even 12 step meetings for hoarders to help clutter-bust. In terms of nutrition, many foods contain mood-boosting properties – For example, garbanzo beans raise serotonin levels, hot peppers release endorphins, green tea contains caffeine and theanine to balance you, salmon contains omegas and EFA’s.

Try a cleanse like Purium for a jump start. Cutting down or cutting out alcohol is also suggested as it’s a recipe for depression. Turn off the news, reduce your time on social media, surround yourself with uplifting spiritual and aware friends.
Consider volunteering and doing service work, practicing karma yoga and philanthropy will make you feel great about yourself and get your mind off your problems even temporarily.
Join a club, learn a new sport, engage in a new activity.
