The Rebuild, Part 3: Probiotics, Produce & Patience
Having a fever of 103.5 for almost 6 days can burn up a lot... on every level. After a few days of antibiotics and thinking I had Lyme Disease, I returned to a normal temperature. It was clear to me that I needed to change a few things. I decided it was time to focus on the basics of gut health. After those five days of antibiotics, I ramped up on my morning probiotics: 8 pills, 6 Amla tablets and a few chlorella tablets. I took these on an empty stomach along with 20 oz of water with lemon. Amla is an ayurvedic herb, also known as Indian Gooseberry, with the following benefits:
- Slows down aging
- Cures sore throat
- Fights against heart disease
- Increase diuretic activity
- Increased metabolic activity
- Reduced blood sugar
- Increased level of fiber in body
- Boosts immunity
Probiotics are live bacteria and yeasts that help to keep our microbiome in balance and our immune system strong. Because about 60-80% of our immune system lives in our gut, the use of probiotics leads to an improved immune system, as well as a boost in glow and skin health. I was dedicated to rebuilding my immune system and probiotics were the perfect next step. Here are some other dietary sources of probiotics that you can use in your day to day to optimize your gut health. Dairy:
**If you have a dairy sensitivity, try a yogurt and kefir alternative. There are water or coconut kefir, almond or coconut yogurt and more. Be sure to check the label when you’re shopping, as many are filled with sugar!
I like fermented foods:
- Apple cider vinegar
**If you have a soy sensitivity, don’t incorporate miso or kimchi into your lifestyle. Anytime we get sick, we have the opportunity to listen to our bodies and make positive changes. If you are fortunate enough to get better, stay connected to how you felt when you were sick. Remember that relationship you had and should have with your body. Everything is stored in our mind and body, and bringing ourselves into that awareness will help you make healthier choices every single moment. Stay healthy. Namaste.
